My family’s 24-room motel gave me a simple place to start. We already deal with recurring fixture replacements, so I compared what several items cost at retail with what they cost me to print.
Toilet handle
A replacement toilet handle was about $11.79 at retail, with some models costing $15 or more. The approximate print cost was $1.21. At our motel, toilet handles usually need replacement about once a year because the metal rusts in the water.
Shower soap holder
A store-bought soap holder was about $17.49, depending on material and size, while the version I printed cost about $1.30 in material.
Mirror clamp
The mirror clamp was interesting for another reason: the exact size we need is difficult to find. Comparable clamps often cost around $2–$5 each. The print cost was about $0.16.
Room sign
Room signs vary dramatically in material and design. I found options beginning around $6 with an average closer to $25. A room sign I printed cost about $1.25.
