Three Layers of Research
I started with a problem my family actually experienced, tested it against other hotel and motel owners, and then compared what I found with outside academic and industry research.
Family Motel Case Study
I recorded the number of fixtures on our property, what breaks, what replacements cost, what I could 3D print, and how far we travel for supplies.
21-Owner Survey
I asked hotel and motel owners about maintenance spending, replacement parts, ordering delays, technology access, and interest in 3D printing.
Outside Research
I reviewed research on hospitality maintenance, rural business constraints, distributed manufacturing, 3D-printer economics, and environmental impact.
What the 21 Responses Showed
The survey focused on the operating realities of smaller lodging businesses and whether 3D printing could fit those realities.

What the Problem Looks Like at One Property
My family’s motel has 24 rooms. I used our own property to compare recurring replacement needs, retail prices, printing costs, and travel time.

Toilet handles at the motel generally need replacement about once a year because the metal rusts in the water. The motel already uses 3D-printed soap holders and vases, while mirror clamps are a useful example of a part that can be difficult to source in the exact size needed.

The questions were grouped around the property, the items that break, the money owners spend, access to parts, and their comfort with technology.

Academic & Industry Research I Used
The survey was only one part of the project. I also looked for research that could explain why small maintenance items matter and whether local 3D printing can actually create economic value.
Life-Cycle Economic Analysis of Distributed Manufacturing with Open-Source 3-D Printers
The project notes highlight the study’s finding that one 3D-printing repository was associated with more than $60 million per year in offset consumer purchases and that consumers can create higher-value items for less than comparable commercial products.

The paper was used to support the idea that consumer open-source printers can produce enough value to become financially worthwhile investments.
